I was on the search for a hydration solution, that would functional enough to use from trail half marathons to Spartan Beast Races.
This solution would have to be lightweight, low-profile, pockets to store supplements, support at least a 1.5 liter water bladder, no chaffing and allow me to mobilize through obstacles during an OCR event.
My search resulted in choosing the Geigerrig Rig Cadence Hydration Vest! The Geigerrig Rig Cadence supports a 1.5 liter (50 oz.) pack engine (reservoir/bladder), which works well for me in most races. The included bladder is easy to fill and has a Hydrapak Slide Top mechanism which provides a very strong seal that is leak free and holds back the pressure of the GEIGERRIG system, while additionally provides easy refilling and drying. Another great feature of the Hydrapak Engine, is that you can turn it inside-out and wash it in the top of the dishwasher! This part of the solution allows one to spray to cool-off, clean, share without having to place your mouth on the bite tube! Both the air and water tubes are quick-release valves.
The Geigerrig Rig Cadence provides two pockets, one on each side of the vest. One utilizes a zipper to open and close, the other utilizes a small strip of Velcro in the middle of the pocket opening. The size of the pockets were more than sufficient enough for me to carry my gels, bars phone, or keys. On the back of the vest, there is an additional pocket on the outside of the bladder compartment. The pocket provides additional room for extra supplements and/or small amounts of gear you may need out on course or to store your sleeves and gloves on the chilly starts.
While wearing my Geigerrig Rig Cadence during my trainings and races, I nearly forgot that I was wearing the vest and didn’t notice the additional weight of the water or stability of the vest.
In the past 18 months of using the Geigerrig Rig Cadence, I ran have run several Spartan Races, trail races and would highly recommend this solution. While the entire solution may be a bit heavier, you can lighten the weight, by leaving the Power Bulb (pressurizes the reservoir/bladder) at home.
I only have 2 “cons” of this vest are that I was right in the middle of the sizing for the two offered, as third size would be a great addition. The other is to be able to completely seal the non-zippered pockets to mitigate the sand/dirt/mud loading into these pockets during and OCR. (Even though the vest was not designed for these types of events)
NOTES ON SPARTAN RACES/OCRs:
During the Spartan Races I found that the Geigerrig Rig Cadence held up exceptionally well in the conditions. During these events, I did not remove the vest to complete the obstacles. I crawled under barbed wire, swap creeks and completely submerged it in muddy water! (Pro Tip: place the bite valve in mouth, before entering these types of conditions, to keep it clean). The pack did not retain a lot of water and dried very quickly.
After the completion of the race I washed the entire unit thoroughly as dried mud in zips is a big no-no.
After these races, I noticed the zipper functionality had diminished. I have learned another tip of applying some grease on the zippers prior to getting the zippers muddy or dirty. Since I have since learnt that using some lubricant on the zippers can help improve its lifespan of the zipper and minimize the collection of dirt and mud. I have been using Gear Aid Zip Care Zipper Cleaner & Lubricant.
