GORE Labs2Woods Blogger Summit Day 4

The morning came early and the last of my deer camp pals gathering all of their gear to catch their early flights back to their homes and we were about a 2 hour drive the Philly airport. I opted to not hunt at all and organize my gear, partake in the beautiful surroundings and reflect on the past few days.

WRAP-UP

First thoughts of the summit were “WOW” there is a ton of science behind GORE’s products. I now have a better understanding of the engineering, science and testing that goes into “GORE” labeled garments as well as other product for other industires.  Now, I understand what I am paying for in a GORE product and I hope you do to. For me this has been as educational and eye-opening as it has been fun, even as a user of Sitka Gear for more than 3 years. And will likely add GORE garments to my and my family’s wardrobe in future purchases.

Feel free to contact me if you have any questions on this information related to GORE products and or Sitka Gear products.

Questions That Were Requested By Some Readers

  • How does GORE handle their “Carbon Footprint”?
    • Apparently, they have been reducing their carbon footprint for many years now. . One example was, they were the first to offer “end of life” recycling, in were they will recycle old GORE products. They also have invented a special GORE cover for composting, that reduces the release of gases and that they have been using solvent free emissions since 1986.
    • Their environmental stance is founded on 3 key elements?
  1. They are committed to sound science (they only use something if it’s proven).
  2. They use life cycle assessments as their benchmarks (from the point of excavating raw materials up to disposal).
  3. They see the durability of their products as the cornerstone of their approach.
  • How does GORE compare themselves to other fabrics like eVent and Pertex?
    • GORE does not discuss competitor’s products….only the effectiveness of their products.
    • Is the GORE-TEX Pro Shell used in any of the OPTIFADE Products?
      • Not at this time
      • What are the circumstances or ideal conditions for the WINDSTOPPER and GORE-TEXproducts to show their effectiveness?
        • Ideal conditions for our GORE-TEX brand materials? Rainy, Windy and cold conditions when you need durable waterproof, windproof and breathable comfort and protection.Regarding breathability, the conditions where GORE-TEX products and WINDSTOPPER products show their greatest performance is when the highest driving force for moisture migration would occur. That would be dry cold environments with wind. The body’s internal temperature is hot so the micro climate around it can hold more moisture in the air, the outside is cold and can’t hold as much, nature moves things to equilibrium. Inside the garment, the environment will contain more moisture than outside, so nature will want to drive the moisture out to reach equilibrium. Wind will chill the body so having a wind stopping layer will provide for more comfort.Although the driving force is still the big thing, when the weather is nasty other factors kick in like a great DWR to keep the outside textile from wetting out and the GORE-TEX membrane to provide the rain barrier.
        • Ideal conditions for WINDSTOPPER brand materials. Cold, cool, windy and light snow or drizzle when you want windproof, breathability and water resistance. (not waterproofness)

“GORE’s Products Do What They Say They Will Do.”

I must disclose that GORE allowed me to keep my Sitka Gear and Danner Boots.
