Project Katera – Part 3

My Katera now has been stripped down, all parts cleaned and lubed with Scorpion Venom. The new custom strings and cables are installed with the G5 Meta Peep tied in, the strings and cables are treated with Scorpion Venom Polymeric String Fluid. To date after 100+ shots the peep has barely rotated.

The next step was researching arrows for my setup. To recap the specs of the bow my draw length is 27″, the current draw weight was set to 74 lbs, I purchased some G5 Montec 100 grain broadheads and some G5 Pre Season Montec broadheads from South Shore Archery. Some of my goals were to shoot a heavier arrow weight of at least 400 grains, achieve 60+ foot pounds of kinetic energy and more than .48 momentum at 50 yards. All while maintaining good spine and at least 10% Front of Center on the arrow. So, I ran this configuration through Archers Advantage and OnTarget 2 (OT2), just for comparison. But, personally I like OT2 better as it has more sight tapes and some other functionalities in it that works for me.  [Read more…]

Project Katera – Part 1

I was interested in trying out a new bow, but not this year! Then, I came across a classified posting on Bowcast.com for a 2008 Hoyt Katera – 26.5″ draw, 70-80lb limbs, G5 Expert II Rest, Fuse Factory Strings and a brand new set of G5 Matreo Bow Strings.

So, I conversed with Aneal to get some additional information on the bow. I took the Hoyt plunge and another project was on my plate for the season. This needed to be done pretty quick, if I wanted to be proficient and confident in the bow for this upcoming hunting season.

The first thing I did was purchase a set of 27″ cams, took the factory strings off and installed the G5 Matreo Bow Strings. I figured I would shoot the bare bow 150-200 times to allow the strings, cable to stretch and seat. This is where my “schedule” got delayed. Only after 75 shots, my peep was almost 180* out! I have never had this happen on a set of strings before. So, I continued to shoot it by eyeing on the side of the peep. I shot the bow another 75 shots and the peep only turned another10* or so.

But, this was enough for me to make a change the strings.
