As some of you head out for your elk hunt this year or begin packing for your upcoming backcountry hunts, hopefully you use a checklist of some sort. I have a spreadsheet with all of my gear on it with multiple columns. Idaho Elk Trip 2010: Reflections

I am not sure what would shut the elk vocalizing after 2 ½ days, could it have been the forestry guys? Maybe!  Could it have been wolves? How about a mountain lion? We saw both tracks while hunting. But, I talked to a few other guys that hunt the same zone about 20 miles apart from where we were and they experienced the same thing on the same days.

It was a good hunt, not only to challenge myself, test new gear and but in taking a greenhorn on this type of adventure. Even though Greg was not physically or mentally prepared we were able to adjust the hunt to his abilities and made the best of it. Unfortunately, I don’t think Greg will be signing up to join any of my backcountry experiences unless there is are horses involved and porta potty! [Read more…]

Idaho Elk Trip 2010: Day 2

Bagel, Peanut Butter, Honey and Bacon Sandwiches-flattened!

Woke up early the next morning, no alarm clock needed as I was filled with anticipation. Got dressed, ate some breakfast that the hotel offered and then drove to the grocery store to get some food for our sandwiches.  We each made four bagel, peanut butter and honey and bacon sandwiches to take with me on this trip. Back to the hotel, made our sandwiches, took showers, loaded the truck and were headed to the trailhead by 8am. [Read more…]

Bonsai Trip 1 for 2010

Now that I have had my new Hilleberg Soulo tent for a little over a month, I was chomping at the bit to give it a go!

Since the holidays, my family and I have been either going to visit someone or attend an event every weekend! Now, Ciro’s 2nd birthday doesn’t count, as I wouldn’t miss that for anything!

Finally, a weekend arrives with no plans! So we go through our normal evening ritual with dinner and putting Ciro to bed. But, before Amy hits the hay I asked if she minded if I went camping. She said “sure, just pack prepared and bring a weapon!

So, with the temperatures dropping faster than Tiger’s shorts and a low pressure front moving in, I loaded the Jeep to hit the road. I thought that this would be a great test for me and some of my gear.
