Award Recognizes RMEF Successes in Kansas

MISSOULA, Mont.–The Rocky Mountain Elk Foundation has received a special Prairie Partner Award in honor of its exceptional habitat work for elk and other wildlife on the Cimarron National Grassland in Kansas.

The award was presented by the National Grassland Council, a joint committee of the U.S. Forest Service and Natural Resources Conservation Service.

Since 1989, thanks to RMEF volunteers raising funds across Kansas, the organization has helped complete 21 conservation projects on the Cimarron, an effort valued at more than $700,000. Projects have included relocating elk, enhancing more than 38,000 acres of habitat, improving water sources, restoring riparian areas and researching elk behavior.

Joe Hartman, district ranger at Cimarron National Grassland, said, “RMEF has truly been a great partner in re-establishing and managing elk in the Great Plains.”

RMEF Regional Director Bill Kenney accepted the Prairie Partner Award in May from National Grassland Council chairperson Tony Dixon. [Read more…]

Linton Outdoors – Exceptional Products with Personalized Service

LOLogosloganweb - Copy

I love finding, supporting and working with small businesses in all aspects of life! This brings me to Linton Outdoors.  Chad was referred to me by Collin of Cottrell Design. Colin and I have met via the social networks and have used him for some graphic work.

Chad is filling his store with quality gear made for the backcountry and that he has tested. Anyone who has spent some time in the backcountry knows that quality gear is a necessity!  To simplify this, if you have mediocre boots and pack while trekking, your memories will not be that fond.  In fact the only memories you will have is how your back and shoulders hurt and how you tried to stop the blisters from hurting and continue to spread like poison ivy! Great American Backyard Campout

Being outside is such a gift, especially in the summer. Camping, whether it is in tents or a yurt, or slightly more dignified in a shed guest house, is one of the many joys in life as you are at one with nature. Remember summer evenings catching fireflies, star-gazing and sharing campfire stories? Maybe you roasted marshmallows, or simply sat back on a porch swing (like the ones from The Charming Bench Company) and fell asleep under the stars. Create lasting memories and happier, healthier children by connecting with family and friends in the great outdoors. Join National Wildlife Federation’s Great American Backyard Campout !

Kids today spend half as much time outside as their parents did, missing out on the simple pleasures of daily outdoor time. One of the Advantages of A Cupola could be that they encourage you to get your family out of the house into your charming backyard! Here at the National Wildlife Federation, we know that kids are healthier and happier when they spend time outside every day. NWF programs like Green Hour, Nature Find, Trees for the 21st Century, Certified Backyard and Schoolyard Habitats are bringing kids back into the great outdoors. Your support will help us keep these initiatives going! [Read more…]

Elk Foundation Voices Support for Elk Restoration in Va.

MISSOULA, Mont.–The Rocky Mountain Elk Foundation today voiced its official support for the concept of restoring elk populations in Virginia, and praised the Virginia Department of Game and Inland Fisheries for its research and analysis of five proposed alternatives for restoring a species native to the Old Dominion State.

“There is no higher calling in conservation than restoring a native game species to sustainable, hunt-able, balanced populations,” said David Allen, RMEF president and CEO. “When the citizens of Wisconsin, Kentucky and Tennessee decided to bring elk back to those parts of their former range, we were there to help, and those successes are among the most rewarding and popular accomplishments in our organization’s history.”

Allen encouraged Virginians to get involved in the process. The public can comment on the agency’s proposals at a series of meetings and online by Aug. 1, 2010. [Read more…]

How About Your Father’s Day

Did all the fathers out there enjoy their Father’s Day? I enjoyed my weekend as it was filled with pride, enjoyment, exercise and great food!

The weekend started off with my son Zakk graduating from high school. When this happens you have mixed emotions…I am extremely proud that he has achieved this milestone and he is eager to challenge himself with the next milestone in his life. But, at the same time is comes with some sadness that he will off traveling, working, women and other things that life brings us and not as much time for me. I know that sounds selfish, but….
