Top 25 Elk Counties

MISSOULA, Mont.—Counties in Colorado, Montana, Utah, Washington and Wyoming are among the 10 fastest-growing areas to benefit from wildlife habitat protection by the Rocky Mountain Elk Foundation.

A newly released Top 25 list shows the relative significance of RMEF habitat protection projects. Listings are based on “RMEF Impact Ratios.” The ratios reflect county-by-county totals of RMEF-protected lands versus current local forces of population growth and residential development, according to data from the U.S. Census Bureau. Proceed as if you were going to buy a habitat stamp
The next screen will show the products you have on file
If you drew a Elk tag you will have an additional entry for an Elk tag

The caviat is, if you applied for more than 1 choice, you won’t know which you drew. So, you won’t know is which license you drew unless you only had a first choice.

FWP Seeks Comment on Wolf Hunting

Montana Fish, Wildlife Parks-FWP

Montana’s Fish, Wildlife & Parks Commission is seeking comment on a wolf hunt proposed for the 2011 season.

Based in part on lessons learned from the state’s first regulated wolf hunt in 2009, FWP wildlife managers propose to create 14 wolf management units and an overall harvest quota of 220 wolves. Commissioners approved a harvest quota of 186 wolves across 13 wolf management units for the 2010 season, which was blocked by a federal court.

“This season proposal is very similar to the season considered last year and it’s one that is properly balanced,” said Ken McDonald, FWP’s chief of wildlife. [Read more…]

Wolf Delisting News

Big Game Forever

Big Game Forever Supporters,
There is more big news for the Northern Rockies and Western Great Lakes on wolf delisting.  Yesterday, May 5, 2011, US Fish and Wildlife Service announced finalization of wolf delisting of the Northern Rockies (not including Wyoming) and also the Western Great Lakes (after a public comment period).  The decision to delist is based on overwhealming consensus that: (1) gray wolves are recovered; and (2) that is not appropriate to use the Endangered Species Act (ESA) as an ongoing management tool in these states.  Interior Secretary Ken Salazar boldly explained, “From a biological perspective [wolves] have now recovered.”  Separately Secretary Salazar indicated, “These delistings are possible because the species is recovered in these regions.”

New Utah Concealed Permit Law

Legal Heat Reciprocity Concealed Weapon Map

On May 10, 2011 several new Utah laws will go into effect regarding concealed firearm permits, fees and applications.

One major change in the new law is regarding some non-resident applicants for the Utah concealed firearm permit. If a non-resident applicant is from a state that either has a formal reciprocity agreement with Utah or recognizes the Utah concealed firearm permit (ALL OF THE GREEN AND BLUE STATES ON THE MAP ABOVE), the applicant must hold and provide proof of a current concealed firearm or concealed weapon permit issued by the applicant’s state of residency upon application for the Utah concealed firearm permit. WHAT: All day outdoor event – archery, fishing, and shooting sports, dinner, awards, prizes.
WHEN: Friday, May 20th, 2011; approximately 11 a.m. to 8 p.m.
WHERE: The Cove, Halifax County, VA
WHO: Men and women who have served or are serving their country in one of the five (5) military branches of service – U.S. Army, Air Force, Coast Guard, Marines, or Navy are invited. There are 45 spaces available.
