Special Rules for Late Elk Season in GMU 54

GUNNISON, Colo. — The Colorado Division of Wildlife is reminding late season hunters in Game Management Unit 54 northwest of Gunnison to be aware of special regulations that apply to this hunt.

The late elk season for this unit runs from Dec. 1 to Dec. 31. The hunting area, however, is split into two sections, one east of West Antelope Creek, and the other west of West Antelope Creek.

Licenses designated L1 are valid in an area east of Antelope Creek and West Antelope Creek, east of the boundary of the West Elk Wilderness, south of the Kebler Pass Road (CR 12) and west of Colorado Highway 135.

The L2 licenses are valid for the area west of West Antelope Creek.

In addition, hunters should be aware that two state wildlife areas in GMU 54, Gunnison SWA and Centennial SWA, are closed to hunting and public entry. Gunnison SWA is closed Dec. 1 to March 31; Centennial SWA is closed Dec. 1 to June 30. The closures are in place to protect Gunnison-sage grouse leks, and to keep herds of elk from going onto private ranches and causing game damage conflicts during the winter.

However, two other State Wildlife Areas in GMU 54 remain open for hunting. Hunters with
an L2 license may hunt on the Sapinero State Wildlife Area which is located north of Blue Mesa Reservoir

At the Miller Ranch State Wildlife Area, hunters with an L1 license can hunt in the area south of Gunnison County Road 7. The portion of the Miller SWA north of Gunnison County Road 7 is restricted for mentored youth hunts. Reservations for a mentored youth hunt can be made through the Gunnison DOW office.

Youth, 12 to 17, with unfilled antlerless elk or either-sex elk licenses can hunt in any GMU in the state that offers a late season. If you have an either-sex tag, you must go to a DOW office to convert it to an antlerless license. Those with unfilled bull tags are not eligible. Check the 2010 Colorado Big Game brochure for regulations and late-season dates and locations.

For more information about GMU 54, call the DOW’s Gunnison office at (970)641-7060. You can also read the 2010 Big Game brochure on line at: www.flipseekllc.com/coloradodow2010biggame.html

Most other public land in GMU 54 will be open throughout the season. But hunters are advised to check on possible closures with the U.S. Forest Service at (970)641-0471; or the BLM at (970)642-4940.
