Pennsylvania: Game Commission Offers Support for Sunday Hunting, License Fees

Pennsylvania Game CommissionThe Pennsylvania Game Commission today offered testimony to legislators on two issues important to the state’s hunters and trappers.

First, Game Commission Deputy Executive Director Bryan J. Burhans testified before the Senate Game and Fisheries Committee about the potential expansion of Sunday hunting. Then, Game Commission Executive Director R. Matthew Hough testified before the House Policy Committee on the importance of a license-fee increase and Senate Bill 1166, which would enable the Game Commission to set its own fees for licenses. Hunting on Sundays in VA Law Effective July 1, 2014

Virginia Dept of Game & Inland FisheriesOn March 5, 2014, Governor Terry McAuliffe signed into law Hunting on Sundays. The new law allows hunting on Sundays under certain circumstances. A person may hunt waterfowl, subject to restrictions imposed by the Director of the Department of Game and Inland Fisheries, and a landowner and his immediate family or a person with written permission from the landowner may hunt or kill any wild bird or wild animal, including nuisance species, on the landowner’s property. However, the aforementioned hunting activities cannot occur within 200 yards of a house of worship and prohibits the hunting of deer or bear with a gun, firearm, or other weapon with the aid or assistance of dogs on Sunday. Some may wonder if other weapons fall under this without the dogs being present, however. A few residents are seeking clarification on matters like “are switchblades illegal” and other such questions, to help understand the law and to better understand the potential loopholes that could be used in defense. This important piece of legislation, which passed the Virginia House of Delegates by a bipartisan 71-27 vote on January 28, allows Sunday hunting on private lands with written permission from the landowner.
