SuperTag sales top $180,000

Montana Fish Wildlife Parks - FWPMontana Fish, Wildlife & Parks sold a combined 36,042 chances in the SuperTag drawing for moose, sheep and goat hunts in Montana this fall, raising $180,200 for law enforcement and the state’s hunter access program.

A Bellevue, Wash., hunter won the drawing for a bighorn sheep tag, which was conducted earlier this week at the agency’s Helena headquarters.

The tag allows Henry Valentine to hunt a bighorn sheep in any Montana sheep hunting district. Valentine purchased 20 chances, according to Hank Worsech, licensing bureau chief for FWP.

Hunters bought 20,304 chances for the sheep SuperTag.

Ian Weaver of Fredericksburg, Ohio, won the goat SuperTag. He bought five chances in the drawing. There were 5,801 chances sold for the goat SuperTag.

Montana hunter Larry Martin of Clinton won the moose SuperTag. He bought five chances out of the 9,937 chances sold.

Last year, all three SuperTag winners were from Montana.

The odds of winning a moose, bighorn sheep or mountain goat SuperTag are about 1 in 15,000, according to FWP officials.

Each year, Montana attracts nearly 56,000 applications for about 1,000 mountain goat, moose and bighorn sheep hunting licenses awarded through annual special drawings.

While those coveted licenses must be used in a specified hunting district, SuperTag winners can hunt in any district in Montana where seasons are established for the big game species identified on the license.

Hunters have until July 30 to purchase chances for elk, deer, bison, antelope and mountain lion SuperTag hunting licenses.

Hunter Deadline June 1

Montana Fish Wildlife Parks - FWP

June 1 is the deadline to apply for Montana Fish, Wildlife & Parks special drawings for elk, deer and antelope permits.  Applying for special big game hunting permits and licenses is a lot easier these days for hunters who use the Internet instead of laboring over a paper application.

Resident and nonresident hunters can apply for special permits and licenses simply by going to the FWP Web site at fwp.mt.gov and using FWP’s Online Services.

Additional information about FWP’s SuperTag lottery and how you can purchase $5 chances is also available online on FWP’s SuperTag web page. The SuperTag deadline for entering chances to win a moose, sheep and goat SuperTag is July 2, and for deer, elk, antelope, bison, and mountain lion it is July 30.

Bison Added To FWP's Special License Drawings

The deadlines to apply for FWP’s special license drawings are May 1 for bison, moose, bighorn sheep and mountain goat; and June 1 for elk, deer and antelope.

The May 1 deadline for bison is new this year.

Applying for special big game hunting permits and licenses is a lot easier these days for the growing number of hunters who apply online at fwp.mt.gov.

Internet applicants receive instant confirmation that their applications are accepted and accurate, a feature that protects hunters from being excluded from a special drawing. To avoid the one unintended slip-up that can’t be detected, applicants should double check their desired hunting district numbers before and after entering them. Once submitted, the application can’t be changed.

Hunters can apply online at fwp.mt.gov . Click “Apply for a Permit or License.” Applicants will need a MasterCard or Visa credit card. A convenience fee of $1.25, plus two percent of the total purchase, will be added to the purchase price.

For those who don’t own a computer, Internet access is available at Montana’s 80 public libraries and 30 branch public libraries. Paper applications are available at all FWP offices and from most license providers.

Additional information about FWP’s $5 SuperTag lottery is also available online on FWP’s SuperTag Web page. The SuperTag chances are available for bison, moose, sheep, mountain goat, deer, elk, antelope, and mountain lion.

An unlimited number of these five dollar SuperTag chances are available. Eight lucky hunters will win the chance to hunt one of Montana’s big game species including a moose, bighorn sheep, mountain goat, elk, deer, antelope, mountain lion and bison in any legal district open for that species.

When you purchase a SuperTag, you are a winner whether your name is drawn for a hunting license or not. That is because SuperTag lottery proceeds go to enhance hunting access and boost FWP enforcement efforts, both of which benefit hunters.

To purchase a SuperTag, you’ll need a 2009 conservation license, a prerequisite license that many outdoorsmen and -women purchase early in the year. Then just visit an FWP office or FWP license provider’s establishment, or go online at fwp.mt.gov and use FWP’s online licensing service.

SuperTag deadlines are July 2 for the moose, bighorn sheep and mountain goat hunts, and July 30 for the deer, elk, antelope, mountain lion and bison hunts. The SuperTag drawings will be held mid-July for the moose, bighorn sheep and mountain goat hunts and held mid-August for the deer, elk, antelope, mountain lion and bison hunts.

If a hunter wins a SuperTag and also draws a license or permit through FWP’s special permit license drawings, the hunter will be required to surrender that license or permit before receiving the SuperTag. FWP will refund the fee associated with the special permit or license and reinstate any bonus points.
